Ordinary Portland cement

Ordinary Portland cement is the most common type of cement that used in general across the world. concrete, mortar, stucco, and non-specialty grout are the main ingredients in this cement.

Main chemical constituents of ordinary Portland cement

Lime (CaO)	60-65 %
Silica (SiO2)	17-25%
Alumina (Al2O3)	3-8%
Iron oxide (Fe2O3)	0.5-6%
Magnesia (MgO)	0.1-4%
Sulphur trioxide (SO3)	1-3%
Alkaline	0-1%

Usages of Ordinary portland cement

·         OPC cement is used for general construction purposes where special properties are not required.

·         It is used in reinforced concrete buildings, bridges, pavements, and where soil conditions are normal.

·         It isalso used in concrete masonry units and in addition to that also uses in where the concrete is not subject to special sulphate hazard or the heat generated by the hydration of cement is not objectionable.

Advantages of OPC Cement

·         It has great resistance to cracking and shrinkage but has less resistance to chemical attacks.

·         It is used in the construction work where props are removed in the early stages because it has a faster initial setting time than PPC.

·         It has a great advantage that curing period in OPC is less than PPC so it is widely used in the project where curing cost is restricted to certain amount.

Disadvantages of OPC

·         Concrete which is made of OPC has a low durability than PPC because it has a very lower fineness and this results in a higher permeability.

·         OPC has a high heat of hydration in comparison of PPC so it is advised not to used in mass concreting.

·         Where concrete pumping is used in such works OPC can not be used because it produces less cohesive concrete than PPC.

·         It is costlier than PPC.
